Standing desks are beneficial for improving health and work efficiency.

5 Health Benefits of Standing While Working

Numerous studies have shown a connection between prolonged sitting and health issues. Dr. James Levine from the Mayo Clinic used the term “sitting disease” to describe a range of conditions associated with prolonged sitting, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, back pain, certain cancers, and depression. [1] Standing while working has been the subject of many research studies.

  1. Reducing the risk of obesity: Standing can burn an additional 170 calories compared to prolonged sitting. If you stand while working every afternoon, you can burn nearly 1000 calories more per week. This calorie difference may be one of the reasons why prolonged sitting is closely related to obesity and metabolic disorders.
  2. Lowering blood sugar levels: A small study involving 10 office workers found that standing for 185 minutes after lunch resulted in a 43% reduction in blood sugar spikes compared to sitting. [2] Trusted Website PubMed is a data base from US National Institutes of Health. It’s a trusted source of health and medical information. Open the link → Another study involving 23 overweight/obese office workers found that alternating between standing and sitting every 30 minutes throughout the workday led to an average 11.1% reduction in blood sugar spikes. [3] Trusted Website PubMed is a data base from US National Institutes of Health. It’s a trusted source of health and medical information. Open the link → These studies help explain why prolonged sitting is associated with a 112% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  3. Reducing the risk of heart disease: The idea that standing is beneficial for heart health was first proposed in 1953. One study found that bus conductors, who stood throughout the day, had half the risk of heart disease-related deaths compared to their colleagues who sat in the driver’s seat. [4] Since then, scientists have gained a deeper understanding of the impact of prolonged sitting on heart health. Remaining sedentary for extended periods is believed to increase the risk of heart disease by up to 147%, and even an hour of intense exercise may not fully counteract the negative effects of sitting all day.
  4. Alleviating back pain: Back pain is one of the most common complaints among sedentary office workers. Research has shown that participants experienced a 32% improvement in lower back pain after using standing desks for several weeks. Another study by the CDC found a 54% reduction in upper back and neck pain after using standing desks for 4 weeks. [5]
  5. Improving mood and energy levels: Standing desks may enhance overall well-being. [6] Trusted Website NCBI, US National Center for Biotechnology Information, is a trusted source of biotechnology and biomedicine information. Open the link → In a 7-week study, participants using standing desks reported lower levels of stress and fatigue compared to those who remained seated throughout the workday. 87% of standing desk users reported feeling energetic throughout the day, but their overall mood returned to baseline when they switched back to their old desks. Further research has linked prolonged sitting to an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Studies have also found that prolonged sitting is detrimental to your health, even if you are physically fit. Sedentary behavior is associated with early mortality, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Individuals who sit for more than 6 hours per day are more likely to exhibit signs of psychological distress. Standing for at least 4 hours each day can burn an additional 650 calories per week, and using standing desks can reduce discomfort in the shoulders, hands, wrists, and back.

It may also improve work efficiency

  • A study from Texas A&M Health Science Center found a 46% increase in work efficiency among standing desk users. Participants in the study also reported a 75% reduction in bodily pain. [7]
  • A study from Australia discovered that using sit-stand desks can enhance employee motivation and vitality. [8] [9] Trusted Website ScienceDirect.com is a trusted database of scientific and medical publications. Open the link →
  • Research has also shown that non-sedentary work environments can improve employees’ creativity, productivity, and collaboration.

8 Buying tips for standing desks

1. Adjustability

There are three types of adjustability: manual, electric, and pneumatic.

  • We do not recommend manual standing desks. Using a manual crank to adjust the height of your desk can be quite a hassle. Taking a minute to adjust your desk may sound easy, but if you switch positions multiple times throughout the day, the time adds up. In such cases, users may involuntarily reduce the frequency of adjustments and gradually revert to their old habit of sitting continuously.
  • As standing desks gain popularity, there is fierce competition and many cost-effective options available. Choosing pneumatic or electric standing desks does not necessarily mean a significant increase in cost compared to manual ones. Electric adjustment is the most common and right choice for the majority of people. The adjustment speed is typically between 0.7 to 1.7 inches per second, and the noise level is generally around 40-70 decibels—similar to a whisper (30 decibels) or a normal conversation (60-65 decibels). Higher-quality motors provide smoother and more durable adjustments.
  • If you require a very quiet environment, you can opt for pneumatic standing desks. They do not require electricity and have no motor noise.

2. Height adjustment range

When working while standing, the height of your desk should be slightly lower than your elbows. When typing, your elbows should be at your sides, forming a 90-100° angle between your upper and lower arms, and your monitor should be positioned at eye level. When you’re in the market for a standing desk, you should ensure that the desk can be adjusted to the desired height.

Mid-range standing desks often feature three-stage legs, such as the FlexiSpot E7 series shown in the image below, which can adjust its height by up to 25.6 inches. Depending on the shape of the frame you choose — T-shaped, C-shaped, or Oval-shaped, the height adjustment ranges are 22.8″-48.4″, 25.0″-50.6″, and 23.6″-49.2″. It has two electric motors and a weight capacity of 355 lbs.

*All prices are as of the time of writing

On the other hand, entry-level models, in order to reduce costs, may have two-stage legs, like the FlexiSpot E2 shown below, which can adjust its height by only 19.6 inches, 6 inches less than the three-stage legs of the E7 series. Its height adjustment range is 28″-47.6″. In addition, it only has one motor, so the design load capacity is also greatly reduced, only 187 lbs.

You may have noticed that the E7 series has the telescopic end on top and the fixed end at the bottom, providing more stability. On the other hand, the E2 series has an inverted pyramid structure, with the fixed end on top and the telescopic end at the bottom. This structure may offer slightly less stability, but it is considered more cost-effective and simpler to manufacture (however, I’ve been unable to find an easy-to-understand explanation as to why this inverted structure would be more cost-effective).

3. Frame design

As mentioned earlier, the FlexiSpot E7 series allows you to choose the shape of the frame: T-shaped, C-shaped, or Oval-shaped.

  • T-shaped: This is the most traditional and commonly seen design, with the telescopic bar in the middle, resembling a T shape.
  • C-shaped: The telescopic bar is not in the middle but closer to the inner side, resembling a C shape. This design provides more leg space, reducing the likelihood of your legs hitting the telescopic bar. However, (according to the lever principle) the side of the desktop closer to the inner side experiences more force, requiring higher structural demands. If you opt for a cheaper entry-level model with less solid workmanship and materials, it is recommended to choose the traditional T-shaped design.
T-shaped vs C-shaped vs semi-C-shaped

The FlexiSpot E7 series also offers an “Oval Shape” option, but it refers to the cross-sectional shape of the telescopic bar. The standard telescopic bar has a square cross-section, as shown on the left in the image below. The cross-sectional dimensions for the three-stage legs are 2.4 x 2.4 inches, 2.6 x 2.6 inches, and 2.8 x 2.8 inches, while the “Oval Shape” telescopic bar has cross-sectional dimensions of 1.7 x 3.0 inches, 2.0 x 3.0 inches, and 2.3 x 3.6 inches. This primarily affects the appearance, with no significant impact on performance.

Below is the “oval shape” version of the FlexiSpot E7, where you can see the vertical telescopic bar is oval-shaped.

4. Control panel

The control panel of an electric standing desk can generally be divided into three types:

(1) Basic: Only featuring the up and down functions. Some have two buttons with upward and downward arrows, while others have no buttons or arrows — simply raise or lower by pushing up or down.

Below is the control panel of the FlexiSpot E2, an entry-level model starting at only $159. While I still categorize this control panel as “basic,” it includes not only the up and down buttons but also an LED display showing the current height. Additionally, it provides USB-A and USB-C ports for charging, which is quite impressive for a “basic” category.

FlexiSpot E2 Control Panel

(2) Standard: Most mid-range and higher standing desks nowadays come with 2-4 memory presets, allowing you to easily adjust to pre-set heights. If you share the desk with family members or colleagues or have several preferred heights for yourself, these preset and memory functions can be convenient. The Uplift Desk Advanced Comfort Angled Keypad shown below, in addition to the up and down buttons, has 4 memory presets indicated by “M” for “memory.” It also features an LED display showing the current height.

(3) Advanced: These control panels offer more advanced features in addition to height adjustment and memory presets. The following images show the control panels of the FlexiSpot E5 and E7 desks:

  • The control panel of the E5 desk includes height adjustment, 4 memory presets, an LED height display, and an “A” button for “automatic” reminders to change positions. By clicking the button and the up/down arrows, you can set a time interval, such as 30 minutes, and it will remind you to change your posture every 30 minutes.
  • The control panel of the E7 desk includes height adjustment, 4 memory presets, a USB port, and a child lock function. There is a small lock symbol on the top left corner of the “M” (memory) button, which, when activated, prevents children from adjusting the desk height.

Another special design is the Uplift Desk Advanced Paddle Keypad shown below. It resembles the “basic” panel mentioned earlier, without even the up and down buttons. However, it features a built-in display screen similar to Kindle’s E-Ink display. It includes 3 memory presets, timed posture reminders, child lock, and other functions—low-profile yet advanced!

5. Weight Capacity

If you tend to place many items on your desk, you need to consider the weight the motor can handle—don’t forget to include the weight of the tabletop itself! I’ve seen some budget standing desks with a weight capacity of only 50 pounds, while good desks can support two to three hundred pounds, or even four to five hundred pounds! The difference primarily lies in the quality and quantity of the motors. As mentioned earlier:

  • The entry-level FlexiSpot E2 series has only one motor with a weight capacity of 187 lbs.
  • The popular mid-range E7 series has two motors with a weight capacity of 355 lbs.
  • It also offers the EQ7 series with four legs and four motors, providing a weight capacity of 440 lbs.
Image: FlexiSpot E7Q Series
Starting from $1,019.99 at flexispot.com

Besides having a “large weight capacity,” a good standing desk should also be “stable” in terms of:

(1) Minimal wobbling even when bearing weight at the edges and corners.

Image: FlexiSpot

(2) Smooth adjustment without noticeable shaking.

Image: FlexiSpot

(3) No significant wobbling even at the highest position during regular use.

Image: FlexiSpot

The stability of a desk is not quantitatively measured, so you may need to try it out in-store, watch reliable review videos, or opt for brands with good reputations. If stability is of utmost importance to you, consider purchasing a desk with four legs!

6. Desktop Material

The desktop material affects aesthetics, texture, and can greatly impact the price. High-end solid wood desktops may cost several hundred or even thousands of dollars more than economical and practical medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Common desktop materials include:

  • Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF): MDF is a composite material made by bonding wood fibers together under high pressure. It is durable, easy to clean and maintain, and affordable, but lacks texture.
  • Laminate: Laminate consists of plastic adhered to a base material like MDF. It is inexpensive, durable, easy to care for, and offers a wide range of colors and finishes. However, it may lack texture, be susceptible to scratches, and over time, the laminate might peel, crack, or chip.
  • Bamboo: Bamboo is a strong and durable natural sustainable material, known for being environmentally friendly. It grows rapidly and is even considered an invasive species in some areas. It comes in natural, stained, and painted options. The price is higher than MDF and laminate but cheaper than most solid wood options.
  • Solid Wood: Solid wood is durable, long-lasting, and provides a premium natural material with excellent texture—beloved by many. The disadvantages are its high cost, susceptibility to scratches, and sensitivity to moisture. To maintain its appearance, it may require maintenance.
  • Glass: Glass desktops are relatively uncommon. They offer a modern and stylish look and are easy to clean. However, they are not as durable as other materials, prone to scratches and breakage, easily show fingerprints and stains, and can give a cheaper impression.
  • Metal: It’s not very common, but it has the advantage of being sturdy, solid, and durable. The downside is that it’s heavy, expensive, and cold.

If your main concern is durability and affordability, then MDF and laminate might be the best choices. If you prefer natural materials, bamboo and warm solid wood offer the best texture. If your style is modern and fashionable, you can consider glass or even metal desktops, although the options are limited.

7. Desktop Size

You need to consider the size of your space and how much you’ll be placing on the desktop. The most common sizes include:

  • 48 x 30 inches: This is a standard size that fits most people. It can accommodate a laptop, monitor, some documents, and other items. If your room is small, you can consider a smaller size.
  • 60 x 30 inches: This is a larger size that can accommodate two monitors. It’s suitable for people who need more workspace.
  • 72 x 30 inches: This is a very large size that’s suitable for people with a lot of equipment, or those who need ample workspace, or prefer a bright, open office style. Your room also needs to be relatively large, or it will look disproportionate. If you plan to stack a lot of things on it, you need to consider its weight capacity.

Standard desktops are rectangular, but some brands with a wide product line may offer other options such as L-shaped desktops for corners, extra-long desktops for conference rooms, ergonomic curved desktops, and desktops with drawers or storage cabinets. Uplift Desk and FlexiSpot are well-known brands with a wide range of products.

8. Other Considerations

  • After-sales service: Different companies offer different warranties. The minimum warranty is 1 year, while some can be as long as 15 years. Some companies offer lifetime warranties for the base or frame and limited warranties for the desktop or motor.
  • Shipping and assembly: Some brands don’t have ready-made products and only start manufacturing after an order is placed, which can result in longer delivery times. Regarding shipping fees, some brands offer free shipping, while others charge $100 to $150. Some brands also offer “white glove service” options, where they assemble the desk for you at your specified location, but this usually comes at a higher price.
  • Other features: Some desks provide wire trays for securing and hiding cables, mesh or keyboard trays for holding various items. Uplift Desk offers a wide range of accessory options. Some standing desks also come with drawers or small storage compartments, like the FlexiSpot Q8 shown below.

If you value a high quality of life and have a sufficient budget, you can explore their offerings . I tried configuring a desk with African Mahogany Solid Wood (+$690), a 60″ x 30″ rectangular shape (+$170), standard legs (opting for the commercial legs would cost an additional $80, which have slightly thicker legs, an additional crossbar for stability, a slightly lower minimum and maximum height range, but an overall height adjustment range difference of only 0.5″), a power grommet + power outlet (+$39), and an advanced control panel with 4 memory presets (+$39). The total came to $1,537, with a final total of $1,629.22 including taxes. You get what you pay for!
