The Star-Spangled Banner | La Bannière Étoilée |
I | |
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light | Oh, dis-moi, peux-tu voir à la lumière naissante de l’aube |
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? |
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, | Ces larges bandes et étoiles brillantes à travers le combat périlleux, |
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? |
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, | Et l’éclat rouge des fusées, les bombes éclatant dans l’air, |
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. |
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave | Oh, dis-moi, cette bannière étoilée flotte-t-elle toujours |
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? |
II | |
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, | Sur la rive, à peine visible à travers les brumes de l’abîme profond, |
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, | Où l’hostile ennemi repose en silence effrayé, |
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, | Qu’est-ce que c’est que la brise, sur le sommet vertigineux, |
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? |
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, | Maintenant elle saisit l’éclat du premier rayon du matin, |
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream | Dans toute sa gloire reflétée, brille maintenant dans le courant |
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave | C’est la bannière étoilée ! Oh, qu’elle flotte longtemps |
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. |
III | |
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore | Et où est ce groupe qui a juré avec tant de vantardise |
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion, | Que le ravage de la guerre et la confusion de la bataille, |
A home and a country should leave us no more! |
Their blood has washed out of their foul footsteps’ pollution. |
No refuge could save the hireling and slave | Aucun refuge ne pourrait sauver le mercenaire et l’esclave |
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave | De la terreur de la fuite ou de l’obscurité de la tombe |
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave | Et la bannière étoilée flotte en triomphe |
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. |
IV | |
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand | Oh ! puisse-t-il en être ainsi à jamais, lorsque les hommes libres se lèveront |
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation! |
Bles’t with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land | Béni avec la victoire et la paix, puisse la terre sauvée par le ciel |
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. |
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, | Alors nous devons conquérir, lorsque notre cause est juste, |
And this be our motto: « In God is our trust. |
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave | Et la bannière étoilée flottera en triomphe |
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. |
